Résumé :
ENGLISH :
During adolescence, the relationship that teenagers establish with their own body is of crucial importance. The body, which is separated from the mind and yet not integrated with it is the means used by adolescents to develop relationships and interact with the external world, to communicate with others and exchange affection. Through their body, teenagers talk about and represent themselves. The various forms of body manipulation (ways of dressing, music, tattoos, food, drugs etc.) constitute the means by which teenagers get to know their own body, take possession and control of it, and learn how to use it, not only physically but also from the innermost emotional point of view. These forms of manipulation become "messages", and "forms of behaviour" which teenagers have use in order to elaborate and deal with the sometimes contrasting and ambivalent affections that are part of their growth process; they become a kind of initiation ceremony that symbolizes and marks this growth. Violent manipulations of the body (drug addiction, anorexia, bulimia, attempted suicide, etc.), by some individuals who consider the body as being responsible for their own failure and pain, may represent defence mechanisms against deep feelings of depression, anxiety and lack of self esteem, on the one hand, and, on the other, means for asking for attention, care and help.
