Résumé : |
ENGLISH : We asked Latinas in treatment how to facilitate their engagement. Qualitative analysis yielded the following lessons learned: (1) At first contact, take a nonjudgmental approach sensitive to expectations of "respeto" and "dignidad." (2) At intake, be sensitive to cultural expectations of "personalismo," "respeto" and "dignidad." Pace intake so personal relationships can develop. When verifying information and checking for contraband, be aware these activities may be perceived as violations of "dignidad" and "respeto." (3) Expectations of "familismo" uniquely affect engaging family in treatment. Allow for self-pacing of family involvement. Sanctions for noncompliance should consider culturally expected family obligations. (4) Confrontational techniques violate expectations around gender and "simpatia," interfering with treatment. We conclude with some directions for program policy and organizational change. (Review' s abstract) |
