Les auteurs ont étudié la prévalence de l'alcoolodépendance et de l'abus d'alcool chez des patients hospitalisés en psychiatrie et dans les services médicaux d'un centre hospitalier universitaire français. Ils ont comparé les caractéristiques socio-démographiques et cliniques des patients alcoolodépendants en psychiatrie et dans les services de médecine. 177 patients admis à l'Hôpital Louis Mourier (Colombes, France) ont été inclus dans l'étude. La prévalence des troubles alcooliques (abus d'alcool et dépendance) dans tous les services étudiés est de 19,2 % (31 % en psychiatrie et 15,5 % en médecine et chirurgie, p = 0,001). Parmi les 39 patients ayant un trouble alcoolique, seuls cinq sont de "purs" abuseurs d'alcool, sans alcoolodépendance. Les sujets alcoolodépendants et abuseurs d'alcool sont plus souvent des hommes (7 %). Les patients alcoolodépendants hospitalisés en psychiatrie sont plus jeunes que ceux des autres services (36,6 contre 49 ans, p ENGLISH : The authors assessed the prevalence of alcohol dependence and abuse among patients hospitalized in psychiatric and medical wards of a French general hospital. They compared the socio-demographic data and the clinical characteristics of dependent patients in the psychiatric and non psychiatric wards. 177 patients consecutively admitted to Louis Mourier Hospital (Colombes, France) were assessed. Frequency of alcohol dependence and abuse is 22 % among in-patients (31 % in the psychiatric ward and 15.5 % in patients from non-psychiatric wards, p = 0.001). Among the 39 patients presenting alcohol use disorders, only five are "pure" abusers, without dependence. Alcohol-dependent patients and alcohol-abusers are more often men (75 %).
