ENGLISH : This study investigated the alcohol-dependent patient's subjective perception of involuntary admission to a psychiatric unit, based on a sample of ten patients recruited from an outpatient department specialized in the management of alcoholic patients. This study shows that, although the majority of patients consider involuntary admission to be useful and justified, this feeling is nevertheless modulated by the presence or absence of an attentive dialogue between nursing staff and patients. When the patient categorically refuses hospitalization at the time of admission, establishment of a dialogue gradually allows the patient to understand the justification and need for involuntary admission. A constructive dialogue, and attentive and sympathetic listening help the patient to accept the hospitalization. As a result of this supportive listening, the patient will feel secure and will be able to have confidence in the nursing staff and actively participate in the therapeutic process. On the other hand, when this dialogue cannot be established or is minimized, it only reinforces the patient's feeling of worthlessness, submission and rejection of the invo- luntary admission. |
