Résumé : | This report lays out the available data on crime on the continent. Police statistics and survey data are discussed across a range of conventional crimes, including : violent crime: murder, violent assault, sexual assault, and robbery; and property crime : theft, burglary, and consumer fraud. This is followed by a discussion of how seriously Africa is impacted by some of the most robust correlates of crime, including : income inequality; share of unemployed youth in the population ; urbanisation rates ; under-funded criminal justice systems ; and, the proliferation of firearms. Next is an exploration of the role of conflicts in crime in Africa, followed by a brief look at organized crime, including : trafficking of drugs; trafficking of human beings ; trafficking of minerals and oil, timber, and wildlife ; money laundering ; a special focus on West African organized crime, taken from an upcoming UNODC report on the topic. It closes with a discussion of corruption in Africa. (Extract from the document) |
