Résumé : | Alcohol consumption is a well-known risk factor for severe hypoglycemia in insulin-treated diabetes. Studies based on interviews have implicated alcohol use in up to 19% of severe hypoglycemic episodes. Alcohol may promote the risk of severe hypoglycemia by interfering with cognitive function and self-care, compromising awareness of hypoglycemic symptoms, and reducing the mobilization of carbohydrates during hypoglycemia. The use of psychoactive drugs has become common, particularly among young people. Like alcohol, such substances can interrupt self-care and increase the risk of accidents and trauma. To determine whether the use of psychoactive drugs by people with insulin-treated diabetes affects the risk of severe hypoglycemia, we assessed and compared the frequency of use of psychoactive drugs and alcohol before episodes of severe hypoglycemia.
