ENGLISH: The rate of primary broncho-pulmonary cancer in women is rapidly increasing, parallel to the widespread diffusion of smoking in this population. In France, it takes the third place for causes of mortality from cancer. A recent French study by the College of respiratory physicians of the general hospitals has confirmed the existence of numerous differences compared with lung cancer observed in men: the number of women affected before the age of 50 and after the age of 70 is greater than that of men. Among the non-small cell cancers, the adenocarcinoma is predominant, whereas in men it is the epidermoid cancer that is the most frequent. In women, the metastatic stages are particularly numerous, especially in the case of adenocarcinoma. Average tobacco consumption in women is less than that in men, as is the duration of smoking. Moreover, one finds a strong proportion of non-smokers (32,3%), especially in the case of adenocarcinoma (43,4%). These elements have raised the suspicion of a greater sensitivity to cigarette carcinogens, whether that be from active or passive smoking, and evokes the possibility of other favourising factors, hormonal or environmental.
