In these times when sociology is accused of conveying an "apology culture", it is certainly necessary to start by reminding people that understanding is neither an apology nor disempowerment and that we can seek to deconstruct the demonized image of dealers without wanting to substitute it with another image, this time angelized. This is the objective of this text, a largely modified transcription of a speech that I thank ASUD and EHESS for having invited me to give in their joint seminar.
Thus, the public management of drug trafficking and the process of creating the figure of the dealer are the two main approaches to this text, which will mobilize Stanley Cohen's theory associating folk devils and moral panics. But to begin with, I would like to situate my own path in relation to the deal and come back to the reasons for choosing this object of research that has occupied me for about 10 years. In addition to making it clear to the reader what I am talking about, I hope that this introduction on the subject will allow others to start thinking differently about this issue, as I did.
