Research purpose:
The aim of this project was to identify and select good practice examples in the field of HCV awareness, testing, access to treatment and care for PWUD in harm reduction and community settings in Europe20 and to offer service providers, social and health professionals and policy makers relevant information with which to encourage the development of new HCV interventions for PWUD, or to improve existing ones.
Methodology:
The project was divided into two phases. The first phase involved data collection through an exploratory survey among civil society organisations providing harm reduction services in the field of HCV prevention, testing, treatment and care in Europe; an evaluation process of the programmes that qualified as candidates21 (n=61); and the final selection of the organisations which comprise the Good Practice Collection (n=14).
This part of the process was developed with the support of a Review Group which contributed to the development of the data gathering, the development of the evaluation criteria for applicants, and to the reviewing and evaluation process. The Review Group was formed of 11 international experts providing insights from a rage of perspectives, including drug research and monitoring, social and health service provision, lived experiences and harm reduction implementation.
The second phase of the project entailed an in-depth study of the selected Good Practices. This involved data gathering through non-systematic desktop research (including policy documents, grey literature and other relevant contextual data) and semi-structured interviews with representatives of the selected organisations.
