Résumé :
It is well known that substance abuse problems are more common in men compared to women, still it needs to be understood that it is a significant public health problem in women (Brady & Randall, 1999). The characteristics of women substance abusers are quite different than their male counterparts. Women are usually late starters to substance abuse. They are usually influenced by men in their lives such as a spouse or boyfriend to start substance abuse. They usually suffer from a comorbid psychiatric problem such as depression, anxiety or a mood disorder and usually seek treatment earlier in the course of their addiction (Brady & Randall, 1999). Women who use alcohol are less likely to drink alcohol less often than their male counterparts and are less likely than men to develop alcohol-related problems (Fillmore et al. 1997). Finally, women's problems related to substance abuse interfere with functioning in more areas of life as compared to their male counterparts (Fillmore et al. 1997). [Extract]
