Résumé :
Objective: To give an overview of prevalence, trends, and outcomes of binge drinking defined as drinking a high amount of alcohol on one occasion with a focus on European research.
Method: Qualitative review based on a computer-assisted search of articles.
Results: Males have more binge drinking occasions than females. In so-called "dry" (Northern) countries, a higher proportion of alcohol is consumed in binges than in "wet" (Southern) countries. Among adolescents and young adults in particular, increasing trends could be found. Binge drinking is linked to a variety of detrimental social and health outcomes. Yet, due to different definition criteria, the comparison of the studies is limited.
Conclusion: Cross national studies with unified binge criteria and binge drinking in Europe emphasizing consequences are urgent research tasks.
