Résumé :
The use of cocaine and other illicit "club drugs" has become increasingly prevalent, especially amongst teenagers and young adults. Anesthesiologists must deliver safe anesthetic care for surgery no matter the status of the patient. Accordingly, acute and chronic effects of cocaine and club drugs may make anesthetic care difficult. Ecstasy, in particular, is the most commonly abused club drug and potentially one of the most dangerous perioperatively. Familiarity with the drug's effects is crucial to anesthesiologists who may encounter emergency cases involving substance abuse as an inciting or coincidental event. Cocaine has experienced resurgence in use recently and its acute and chronic effects remain dangerous. Pitfalls to be aware of in both scheduled and emergency anesthetics must be appreciated.
