Résumé :
Ethan Nadelmann argues that current drug policy is misguided. He criticizes supply reduction strategies and notes that consumption rates would likely continue even if we were able to reduce or eliminate the supply of drugs from other countries. Harm-reduction strategies that have been implemented in various European countries are described, in contrast to strategies used in the United States. For example, methadone maintenance is available in the United States, but its use is more strictly controlled than in other countries. Nadelmann also describes the results from Swiss and other European studies that have examined the effects of prescribing heroin for addicted individuals. Those results and other harm-reduction strategies implemented elsewhere show great promise and should be used to guide and modify U.S. drug policy.
