Résumé :
Stereotypical perceptions about drug and alcohol dependence often assume that addiction is associated with persons from low-income backgrounds and that persons dependent on drugs need treatment if they are to recover. This article dispels those myths by examining persons from middle-income backgrounds who overcame problems associated with drugs and alcohol without the benefit of formal treatment. Robert Granfield and William Cloud explore the concept of "addict identity" among these respondents and identify reasons that these persons avoided treatment. The authors also note various lifestyle aspects that appear to contribute to natural recovery. Their research findings appear to contradict the assumptions of predominant treatment ideologies.
