Methadone maintenance as a treatment for narcotic addiction has had a relatively brief but stormy history. Emerging from the pioneering work of Dole and Nyswander, it rapidly moved from an experimental treatment program to today's most frequently employed treatment technique. Although methadone maintenance is widely accepted as a treatment modality, some recent work highlights certain problems occurring in such treatment programs; of central concern in the literature is the diversion of methadone from the programs and the consequent availability of this diverted methadone on the streets. Several studies have attempted to document the existence of this diversion and give some estimate of its extent (cf. Walter et al., 1972; Weppner et al., 1972; Stephens and Weppner, 1973; Weppner and Stephens, 1973). This study will build on the previous work and attempt to accomplish several goals. First, it will attempt to provide some indication of the current status of methadone on the streets of New York City. Second, it will attempt to describe how illicit methadone is obtained. Third, it will attempt to contribute to a further under-standing of the diversion process. And fourth, it will attempt to accomplish these goals by using respondents as knowledgeable observers of the current drug scene.
