Résumé :
In this article, Todd Pierce uses ethnographic research to study drug users' social networks. He traces the evolution of networks from their formation to their dissolution. By comparing data on young white heroin users with older African American users, Pierce finds important age/ethnic differences in the areas of networks and risk behaviors. He also documents users' perceptions about their own addictions. Pierce's work and his emphasis on social networks demonstrate the importance of understanding subcultural differences when developing effective harm reduction interventions.
