Résumé :
The use of marijuana for medicinal purposes has a long history, dating back at least a few thousand years when it was used to treat symptoms of constipation, rheumatism and a host of other ailments. Several over-the-counter products containing cannabis or its derivatives were available in the USA during the mid- to late- 1800s, although this practice declined when the drug was prohibited in the USA during the 1930s.The contemporary debate about medical marijuana surfaced approximately four decades ago, and continues today. Although the majority of US states have enacted statutes that acknowledge the benefits of medical marijuana, by late 2009, the drug could be legally accessed in 14 states only.
In this article, Lester Grinspoon discusses the various methods and sources for accessing marijuana for medical purposes and describes the problems associated with these sources of access. He argues that marijuana has great potential for treating various illnesses and symptoms but notes that legislation can be restrictive and actually impedes our understanding of the full benefits of medical marijuana. He also suggests that laws regarding marijuana should mirror the laws regarding the regulation of alcohol.
