La lutte contre le trafic de drogues a été le fil conducteur pour créer Europol et pour renforcer son rôle, tel que défini par les textes relatifs à l'organisation. Après une longue période préparatoire Europol est, comme Eurojust, devenu une agence Européenne. Le domaine de la drogue est une excellente illustration du fait qu'Europol fait partie davantage d'une approche multidisciplinaire, telle que définie dans les programmes et plans d'action respectifs. Europol coopère non seulement avec les services responsables des États Membres, mais aussi avec d'autres agences et notamment avec l'OEDT.
ENGLISH:
The fight against drugs trafficking has been the main motive for setting up Europol and for getting a constantly growing role, as it has been defined by the respective legal acts being at the origin of the old and the new Europol. After a long preparative period, Europol became a European agency, similar to Eurojust. Combating drugs trafficking is a perfect illustration of Europol's role being part of a multidisciplinary approach, such as it has been defined by the respective programmes and action plans. Europol is cooperating not only with the responsible agencies in the Member States, but also with other organisations and more particularly with the EMCDDA.
