Drugs and popular music have been inextricably intertwined since marijuana and jazz flourished in mob-controlled 1920s Prohibition speakeasies. From bebop virtuosos strung out on heroin to the LSD soaked visions of the San Francisco Summer of Love and from reggae's love affair with "herb" to the amphetamine fuelled high-octane rage of punk, each new musical movement has coincided with a new fashion in drugs. Shapiro documents the origins and progress of each new development and tells in detail the stories of music's most famous drug casualties - Charlie Parker, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious - while examining the draconian headline grabbing star-bust tactics of drug enforcement agencies, the perils of ill-conceived anti-narcotics legislation, and the hypocritical collusion of the billion dollar record industry.
