Résumé :
Le cannabis a été utilisé par l'homme depuis la préhistoire autant pour ses vertus médicales et magico-religieuses que pour la confection d'objets obtenus à partir de ses fibres. Aujourd'hui il attire l'attention du monde occidental pour ses propriétés psychoactives. Bien que la recherche ait été stimulée suite à la "redécouverte" du cannabis, il n'y a eu jusqu'ici que peu de données disponibles pour permettre une comparaison inter-culturelle sur les attributs et les effets supposés de ce produit dans son utilisation traditionnelle ou moderne. Ce volume rassemble des contributions en sciences sociales permettant une telle comparaison. Des évidences archéologiques, bibliques, botaniques ou linguistiques attestent de l'ancienneté du cannabis qui se diffusa (probablement à partir du néolithique) selon plusieurs courants historico-ethniques. Deux grands complexes culturels majeurs différents de par leur forme et leur fonction peuvent être distingués : le "complexe ganja" en Inde et le "complexe Marijuana" dans le monde occidental. Le premier est une tradition populaire à la fois sacré et séculaire, le second regroupe la production commerciale de la plante pour ses fibres et l'usage des substances qu'elle contient dans la recherche d'expériences psychédéliques. Par ailleurs deux chapitres reconsidèrent la classification botanique de la plante, critiquent la classification habituelle du Cannabis sativa et offrent une nouvelle approche taxinomique basée sur l'ethnobotanique. En plus de considérations légales, médicales, pharmacologiques et psychiatriques, l'ouvrage traite également de l'usage traditionnel des plantes psychoactives par le Amérindiens.
