Résumé :
ENGLISH :
Drug trafficking is the fastest growing area of international crime. In Britain, it has stimulated the modernisation of policing and propelled us half-way towards a national police force. What is the reality of the crime which stimulates such a far-reaching response? This book rejects the conventional idea that drug trafficking is dominated by large criminal organisations. Big traffickers, the mafia, cartels - these are myths, nourishing the popular imagination and stimulating advances in law enforcement. Using the words of those involved, both the dealers and the detectives, this book exposes the diversity of drug trafficking today, and provides an account of how police operations work. It includes: accounts of the development of drug markets from the 1960s to the 1990s ; a discussion of the evolution of new policing methods, including secret "intelligence development" operations ; insider views on the development of a national detective agency for Britain ; a challenging look at the processing and sentencing of drug traffickers ; extended extracts from a hitherto unpublished and confidential report from the Association of Chief Police Officers.
