Résumé :
Data, drawn from field work in progress in Colombia, South America, are presented on the cultivation, marketing, and consumption of cannabis. The analysis is an effort to liberate cannabis from the individualistic, idiosyncratic thinking of past studies. Emphasis is placed on the structure of the community of which cannabis is a part. Subcultural groups related to various stages of the cannabis cycle are discussed with reference to their position and function in the larger community, their histories, socio-economic characteristics, and relationships to each other. Data on cannabis use are presented on the types of social groupings characterized by participation in the cannabis cycle versus those which are not. (Author' s abstract)
