La prise en charge du toxicomane par l'anesthésiste doit tenir compte du contexte médical particulier de celui-ci et du contexte thérapeutique plus large défini par d'autres instances. La substitution afin d'éviter un syndrome de sevrage est inévitable. L'antalgique sera administré en sus de ce besoin et, souvent à des doses plus importantes que chez le sujet normal.

Pathologies related to opiate abuse as well as problems of maintenance, anaesthetic management, analgesia and withdrawal are described along with a few practical guidelines. Collaboration with other fellow professionals such as psychiatrists is mandatory in order to provide a coherent and global therapeutic attitude. (From authors'abstract)
