This paper outlines the diffusion of the ASI in Denmark, with a special focus on the implementation of a national documentation and monitoring system. The implementation of the ASI in the field of substance- and alcohol-abuse treatment in Denmark has been under way since the early 1990s. The diffusion has produced several problems related to the design of the instrument, to the implementation practice, and to the strategy and purpose behind the implementation. Decoupling seems to be a key issue in the implementation of the Danish documentation system (DanRIS) - that is, decoupling both in the sense of organizational strategic response to undesired interferences and as a consequence of a lack of capacity for implementation.
