Résumé :
The recently completed Comiskey study of the estimation of the prevalence of opiate users in Dublin was the first such study undertaken in Ireland, Prior to that concentration in research had generally been limited to small scale studies or studies of limited populations and Dublin estimates had been limited to evidence from the reports on those in treatment. The Comiskey study found that the actual number of opiate users had been vastly underestimated and, while comparable to estimates in other European cities, the size of the figure would come as a surprise to the policymakers in Dublin. The objective of this paper is to reflect on the implications for policy in the light of the results of the Comiskey study that indicates that there is a much larger problem than would have been expected.
