Résumé :
There are several indications that multiple use of illicit drugs has become a more common behavioural pattern among drug users in Switzerland. Often illicit drugs are combined with legal substances like alcohol, tobacco and medical drugs. This study aims at a first attempt to estimate the amount and patterns of multiple drug use in the country. Patterns of single and multiple use of illicit drugs in users aged between 15 and 39 years were analysed. The sample consisted of 385 Swiss users who admitted to having taken illicit drugs during the previous year. The data were based on telephone interviews conducted in the first Swiss Health Survey, carried out in 1992 and 1993. A critical discussion of the data set is provided. Seven different types of illicit multiple drug users were identified by means of cluster analysis: frequent multiple drug users, predominant heroin users, predominant cocaine users, exclusive methadone users, hard drug and methadone users, predominant heavy cannabis users, predominant moderate cannabis users. Multiple drug users are often also heavy consumers of alcohol, tobacco and medicals drugs. (Author' s abstract)
