Résumé :
This Executive Summary is a synthesis of findings presented at the 56th semiannual meeting of the Community Epidemiology Work Group (CEWG) held in Arlington, Virginia, on June 8-11, 2004, under the sponsorship of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health. Representing 21 sentinel areas in the United States, CEWG members presented reports, citing the most current data on drug abuse patterns, trends, and emerging drug problems in their areas. The areas represented in the CEWG are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New Orleans, New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, Phoenix, St. Louis, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Texas, and Washington, DC. To enhance nonurban representation in the CEWG, information was provided by guest researchers from Maine and Ohio. One highlight of the meeting was a series of presentations by researchers in a Panel on Prescription Drug Abuse. Findings from the CEWG network are supplemented by national data and by special presentations at each meeting. Publications are disseminated to drug abuse prevention and treatment agencies, public health officials, researchers, and policymakers. The information is intended to alert authorities at the local, State, regional, and national levels, and the general public, to current conditions and potential problems so that appropriate and timely action can be taken. Researchers also use the information to develop research hypotheses that might explain social, behavioral, and biological issues related to drug abuse. In addition to presentations by the 21 CEWG representatives and members of the Panel on Prescription Drug Abuse, the meeting included presentations on the following: NIDAs epidemiology research; Emerging drugs, based on Drug Enforcement Administration data; How to access local and State arrest data; The status of and most recent data produced by the Canadian Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use. In addition, updates were presented on three data sources: the Drug Abuse Warning Network, the Forensic Laboratory Information System, and the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring program.
