Résumé :
As a result of reports indicating increased levels of cocaine use in Ireland, the NACD has published this report to provide baseline information on cocaine and its use in Ireland. The report indicates several areas of concern especially relating to the injection of cocaine by some users and also highlights gaps in our knowledge of the implications of so-called recreational use of cocaine powder by the nasal route on an occasional or regular basis. In addition, the challenge to the prevention networks and the treatment services of incorporating another drug with serious social, personal and health consequences into their case mix should not be underestimated. It is our hope that this overview will provide a basis for a consideration of how best to respond to the many issues which arise from the increasing use of this drug, which has effects unique to it as a psychostimulant but which simultaneously poses risks which are common to mood altering drugs in general.
