La statistique criminelle est par principe une statistique de l'activité judiciaire. Dans le cas français, son développement au XIXe siècle concerne surtout les flux internes du système pénal. La valorisation par la criminologie des caractéristiques des condamnés conduit à l'ignorance de cette contrainte. Une ignorance qui entraîne l'effondrement de la production statistique après 1932. Criminal statistics are related to judicial activity. Their development in France during the nineteenth century focused primarily on providing a better description of the internal flows through the criminal justice system. Judging them using a theoretical criminological model which focuses on individual characteristics ignores these constraints. This ignorance brought in its train the collapse of the production of such statistics after 1932.
