Le Kava est une boisson faite à partir d'une plante (piper methysticum), importée en Australie vers 1982, et utilisée par les communautés aborigènes, où elle tend à remplacer l'alcool. Le Kava ayant des propriétés analgésiques et hypnotiques, chercheurs et politiques s'interrogent sur la nécessité d'une règlementation.
ENGLISH:
The use of the traditional South Pacific beverage by Australian Aboriginal communities is discussed. There are few systematic data on the effects of kava, although there has been recent concern regarding its health consequences. The role of the traditional context in minimizing any adverse effects of kava is discussed. It is suggested that government intervention in prohibiting kava use is probably inappropriate particulary with our current state of knowledge. (Author's abstract)
