Au Pays Basque, la consommation d'alcool est bien considérée, socialement parlant. La tradition la relie très étroitement aux échanges sociaux et aux loisirs, sous une forme ritualisée, indispensable à toutes les festivités et célébrations locales. Dans le discours social, l'alcool n'est donc pas considéré comme une drogue, et sa consommation en vient à être perçue comme un indice d'appartenance à l'identité basque. Par contre, la consommation des drogues illégales est associée à l'appartenance au groupe des étrangers culturels et ethniques, on y ajoute même une connotation politique antinationaliste. ENGLISH :
In Basque society, alcohol consumption is socially accepted. Tradition has closely linked it with social interchange and leisure time. In ritual form, it has become an essential element in all local festivities and celebrations. Consequently in this social context, alcohol is not considered a drug ; consuming it has become a sign of belonging to the Basque community. However, the use of illegal drugs is associated with outside cultures and ethnic groups and can even suggest antinationalist affiliation. (Extract from the Author's abstract)
