Dans l'évaluation, les méthodes quantitatives, reconnues scientifiquement, présentent des limites et peuvent être inappropriées lorsque, pour des raisons méthodologiques, l'interaction entre une intervention et le contexte social dans lequel elle a lieu, est ignoré. Souvent, seules les méthodes qualitatives conviennent à l'analyse des problèmes humains complexes survenant dans un contexte social. Grâce à l'utilisation de programmes informatiques, des données abondantes et non structurées, issues de constatations, peuvent être analysées de façon reproductible et rigoureuse.
ENGLISH :
In this paper we argue that quantitative methods are limited and can be inappropriate. This is especially true when, for methodological reasons, researchers ignore interaction between an intervention and the social context within which the intervention occurs. Often it means that results are unconvincing and fail to persuade practioners. Despite the distrust with which some evaluators view qualitative methods, they are often the only appropriate way to analyse complex human problems located in a social context. Such qualitative studies are able to use rich, unstructured data drawn from a variety of settings and analyse these in a rigorous and reproducible manner. Recent developments in the use of computers to analyse unstructured data have added to the confidence with which qualitative methods can be applied to evaluation (Extract from author's abstract)
