Alcohol and other drugs : the response of the political and medical institutions

Le contrôle social, formel et informel, dans le façonnement des comportements envers l'usage de l'alcool et des autres drogues est discuté. Le contrôle social formel est étudié de plus près; il émane de deux institutions. L'Etat, qui incarne les structures politiques et légales est discuté en termes de contrôle social de certaines des conséquences de la consommation d'alcool, telles que l'ivresse publique, l'alcoolisme, la conduite sous certaines alcoolémies, et la criminalité. L'implication des institutions médicales dans le contrôle de l'alcool et de la drogue est discutée en termes de rôle du praticien dans le diagnostic de dépendance à l'alcool et aux drogues. Deux cas actuels, celui de femmes enceintes dépendantes de drogues et celui de patients ayant subi des transplantations d'organes liées à l'alcool, illustrent les interactions significatives entre les réponses des institutions politiques et médicales et les grandes influences qui aident à façonner ces réponses. Formal and informal social control in shaping individual behaviors toward the use of alcohol and other drugs is discussed. Emphasis is placed on formal social control as it occurs in two major institutions. The state, which embodies the political and legal structures of the society is discussed in terms of the social control of some of the consequences of drinking, such as public drunkenness, alcoholism, operating vehicles with specific blood alcohol levels, and crime and alcohol use. The medical institution's involvement in alcohol and drug control is discussed in terms of the physician's role in diagnosing alcohol and drug dependent individuals. Two contemporary case, those of pregnant addicts and alcohol-related organ transplant patients, illustrate the significant interactions between the responses of the political and medical institutions, and the broader influences that help shape these responses.
