A controlled trial of imipramine for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence

Menée dans un programme de désintoxication de San Francisco, cette étude teste l'efficacité de l'imipramine pour traiter la dépendance aux méthamphétamines, et évalue la faisabilité d'un essai clinique contrôlé. 32 participants ont été désignés au hasard pour recevoir 10 (dose de contrôle) ou 150 mg/jour d'imipramine pendant 180 jours. La durée en traitement apparaît plus importante pour les sujets trouvés avec 150mg par au groupe de contrôle (moyenne : 33 jours contre 10,5). Aucune différence significative n'existe pour le pourcentage d'urine positive à la méthamphétamine, pour les critères du Beck Depression Inventory, ou pour le manque. L'utilité de l'imipramine dans le traitement de dépendance aux méthamphétamine demande encore d'autres études.

At the Drug Detoxification Program of the Haight Ashburry Free Clinics, the authors conducted a randomized clinical trial of imipramine in the treatment of methamphetamine dependence. The purposes of the trial were to test the efficacy of imipramine as a treatment for methamphetamine dependence and to established the feasibility of conducting a controlled clinical trial at the clinic. 32 subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 10 (the control) or 150mg/day of imipramine for 180 days. Subjects received intensive counseling. Retention in treatement was significantly longer for subjects who were treated with 150mg of imipramine compared to control (median days : 33.0 versus 10.5). There were no consistent differences in percent of urine samples positive for methamphetamine, Beck Depression Inventory scores, or craving. Determination of the full extent of imipramine's utility in the treatment of methamphetamine dependence awaits a larger trial. (Authors'abstract)
