Le projet "Get it while you can" a été mis en place en 1992 dans le but de briser le cercle vicieux de la délinquance et de la toxicomanie. Il permet de parler des problèmes de drogue du détenu entre son arrestation et son jugement, et de lui fournir des informations sur les services locaux d'aide et de soin. Fort de son succès local, Ray Jenkins explique le concept du projet et les considérations à prendre en compte pour le mettre en oeuvre.

Get It While You Can was set up to make best use of the "window of opportunity" between the arrest and final court appearance of drugusing arrestees. The primary aim is to provide information on local services and to dispel myths. Its success has been demonstrated locally and replicated nationally, and here the author provides a guide of what to be aware of when considering setting-up a similar arrest referral scheme locally.
