The interaction of SES, race/ethnicity and family organization (living arrangements) of adolescents, in relation to severity of use of drugs and alcohol

Sur un échantillon de 487 adolescents toxicomanes, de diverses villes américaines, une étude a montré que la gravité de la consommation de substances et des problèmes liés était moins importante chez les afroaméricains que chez les blancs, excepté pour le crack et l'héroïne. Ces résultats ont été confirmés par une recherche prenant en compte les différences d'organisations familiales, de styles de vie, de niveaux scolaires et de bien-être matériel. Le niveau scolaire n'est pas significativement lié au degré d'abus, mais l'abus est moindre en cas de bien-être matériel familial. Résultat inattendu, la somme d'argent dépensée pour obtenir l'alcool ou les drogues n'est pas vraiment différente entre les noirs d'un faible niveau scolaire et les blancs d'un haut niveau scolaire.
ENGLISH :
In a study of multi-city sample of adolescent substance abusers (487), it was found that the degree or severity of substance use and related problems was less for African-American than for White subjects, except for use of crack and heroin. This confirmation of the findings of earlier research occured after controlling for differences between White and Black subsamples on types of family organization, living arrangements, SES, and whether the family was on welfare. SES was not found to be significantly related to degree of substance use/abuse; but there was significantly less substance use/abuse if the family was on welfare. An unexpected finding was that there was no significant difference between the lower SES Blacks and the higher SES Whites on their reports on the amount of money they spent to obtain alcohol or drugs.
