Self detoxication by amphetamine dependent patients: a pilot study

50 patients dépendants d'amphétamines, fréquentant un service de prise en charge spécialisé, ont été interrogés sur leurs tentatives précédentes pour arrêter leur consommation d'amphétamines. 33 d'entre-eux ont fait un total de 47 essais d'autosevrage, 15 ont suivi un sevrage forcé et 10 un traitement médical. 86% relatent des symptômes de sevrage à la suite de l'arrêt des amphétamines et citent communémment la consommation d'autres drogues comme moyen de supporter ce sevrage.

50 current or past amphetamine dependent clients attending a community drug team service took part in structured interviews about their previous attempts to stop using amphetamine. 33 had made a total of 47 attempts at self detoxification; 15 had undergone enforced withdrawal and 10 had previously sought medical treatment. A total of 86% of subjects described significant withdrawal symptoms on stopping use of amphetamines. Increased use of other drugs was commonly reported as a mean of coping with withdrawal, psychosocial techniques being used less systematically. (From authors' abstract)
