Résumé :
ENGLISH :
Studies of the prevalence of substance use during pregnancy have tended to focus on use of drugs during pregnancy as an issue of primary relevance in terms of exposure to potentially teratogenic substances. Yet, many women whose use of alcohol and other substances continues throughout pregnancy probably meet medical criteria for substance abuse or dependence, and an extensive literature suggests that substance abuse and dependence are closely associated with a host of factors in women's life histories and present mental health that potentially affect their capacity as parents. Women who are dependent on drugs, in particular, have often undergone difficult experiences during childhood, problematic relations during adulthood, and comorbid mental disorders. The remainder of this article reviews what is known about psychosocial and mental health correlates of substance abuse in women as well as what is known about how these factors affect the parenting of substance-abusing women.
