Résumé :
ENGLISH :
The cannabis plant with its 60 cannabinoids and other chemicals has historically been used for a wide variety of ailments in diverse cultures throughout the world. The widespread prohibition of marijuana during most of the 20th century has significantly curtailed modern scientific research on its therapeutic potential. The focus of most of the cannabis research in the US since the 1960s has been to determine its harmfulness. The undeniable fact that can be concluded when one looks at the mountains of studies that have been conducted is the remarkably low toxicity of this drug. Rather than showing its harmfulness, this growing body of research is helping scientists understand how and why it works to alleviate debilitating symptoms and leading to the development of cannabis-based products for many of the same ailments it was used for prior to its prohibition. With the discovery of an endogenous cannabinoid in 1990, researchers are wondering what its role is in maintaining homeostasis. Does the human body need some level of cannabinoid molecules to function optimally and are some disease states related to an imbalance in that level? (Review' s abstract)
