Tobacco use is a major public health problem, and onset usually begins in youth. This article reviews current knowledge and evidence of specific aspects of smoking in youth, tobacco control strategies, and smoking cessation interventions that target young people. Finally, it provides recommendations for primary care physicians. (Editor's abstract.)
