Résumé : | The Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Study was a landmark study in psychiatric epidemiology. It was not only the largest general population survey of psychiatric disorders ever carried out in the USA, but also the first survey to administer a structured psychiatric interview and the first to estimate total population prevalence rates by combining data from a sample of the non-institutionalized household population with data from supplemental institutional samples. The results of the ECA will continue to play a central part in charting the intellectual course of psychiatric epidemiology into the twenty-first century, while the methods and procedures used in tae ECA will serve as models for subsequent research. This paper discusses one small part of the impact of the ECA; on the design and execution of the National Comorbidity Survey and the proposed Children's ECA. Several aspects of the design of the ECA are critically evaluated in the first section of the paper. The second section discusses how the ECA experience with these design decisions influenced the design of the National Comorbidity Survey. The third section discusses the implications of these same decisions for the design of the proposed Children's ECA. |
